Manager/Supervisor
ABOUT US:
BEHAVORIAL ASSESSMENT:
POSITION OVERVIEW:
This role reports to the VP of People and Culture and partners closely with business leaders to provide practical, HR guidance while ensuring operational excellence in employee relations, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and HR systems support.
Direct reports include an HR Coordinator, Recruiter, Payroll Specialist, and an HRIS administrator. The ideal candidate brings the strengths of a seasoned senior HR Business Partner together with people leadership capability, thriving in a hands-on environment and building a responsive, service-oriented HR function.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
HR OPERATIONS LEADERSHIP (Weighting 25%)
- Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary HR team delivering day-to-day HR operations, including HR advisory support, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and HRIS support.
- Set priorities, allocate work, and ensure high-quality, timely execution of core HR processes and employee service delivery across the team.
- Provide senior HR business partner support to leaders on employee relations, workforce planning, performance management, and organizational and team effectiveness.
- Establish and monitor HR service standards, workflows, and team accountability to ensure consistent and efficient HR operations.
- Drive the standardization and maturity of reporting and HR processes and over time, support the transformation to an ERP.
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS & PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT (Weighting 25%)
- Support and advise managers and employees in resolving workplace issues, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline.
- Guide leaders through the performance management process including goal setting, reviews, coaching, and development plans.
- Ensure a consistent and fair approach to employee relations, fostering a respectful and compliant work environment.
- Maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions, performance discussions, and employee concerns.
HR COMPLIANCE & POLICY INTERPRETATION (Weighting 20%)
- Interpret HR policies and employee handbook in compliance with Alberta Employment Standards and applicable laws and recommend updates and improvements to policies.
- Participate in policy reviews and support company-wide communications and acknowledgement.
- Oversee compliance-related reporting and ensure documentation is complete, secure, and accessible.
- Stay informed on legal and regulatory changes that affect HR practices and recommend policy adjustments as needed.
EMPLOYEE LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT (Weighting 20%)
- Oversee end-to-end employee lifecycle processes, ensuring the team delivers effective onboarding, job changes, employee transitions, and offboarding in a timely and compliant manner.
- Partner with the Recruiter to align hiring activity with workforce needs and ensure a seamless handoff into onboarding and integration.
- Mentor and support the HR Coordinator role responsible for processing employee changes and maintaining accurate employment documentation and records and continuously improve these processes.
- Ensure the HRIS Administrator maintains accurate employee data and supports effective use, maintenance, and continuous improvement of HR systems.
HR REPORTING & PAYROLL COMPLIANCE OVERSIGHT (Weighting 10%)
- Review HR metrics and operational reporting including headcount, turnover, absenteeism, recruitment activity, payroll inputs, and service delivery trends.
- Provide oversight to payroll processes through the Payroll Specialist, ensuring accurate and timely coordination of employee changes, approvals, and supporting documentation.
- Use data and team insights to identify process improvement opportunities and strengthen the effectiveness and scalability of HR operations.
- Manage sensitive personnel information with discretion while ensuring strong controls, data integrity, and consistency across HR processes and systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Diploma or degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CPHR designation (or working toward it) is an asset.
- 8-12 years of progressive HR experience, including experience in a senior HR Business Partner, HR Manager, or similar leadership role.
- Demonstrated success leading or mentoring HR team members across multiple functional areas such as advisory, recruitment, payroll, HR administration, and or HR systems.
- In-depth knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards, HR best practices, and workforce compliance.
- Experience coaching leaders, resolving employee relations matters, and driving practical HR solutions in a fast-paced operating environment.
- Strong operational mindset with experience improving HR processes, overseeing service delivery, and using HR data and systems to support decision-making.
- Professional, confident communicator with the ability to navigate sensitive matters with tact, credibility, and integrity.
- Experience supporting Trades and Engineering occupations an asset.
