POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Refrigeration Service is currently recruiting a Commercial Journeyperson Refrigeration Mechanic to work at our Red Deer, AB location.  The Journeyperson Commercial HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Reporting to the Lead Commercial Refrigeration Mechanic, the Journeyperson Commercial HVAC Refrigeration Mechanic will utilize their expertise in commercial HVAC refrigeration systems to ensure the safe, optimal performance and efficiency of HVAC systems in commercial buildings.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

ON THE TOOLS (Weighting 70%)

Installation & Maintenance

  • Install, assemble, and set up commercial refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and piping.
  • Perform regular maintenance and inspections on refrigeration systems to ensure proper functioning, identify issues, and prevent breakdowns.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot problems in refrigeration systems, including electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant-related issues.

System Testing & Calibration

  • Conduct performance tests and calibrations on refrigeration systems to ensure they meet operational and safety standards.
  • Monitor and adjust system parameters, such as temperature, pressure, and airflow, to optimize efficiency and performance.
  • Use specialized tools and equipment, such as pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and leak detectors, to test and diagnose system performance.

HVAC System Upgrades & Retrofits

  • Assess existing HVAC systems and recommend upgrades or retrofits to improve energy efficiency, performance, and sustainability.
  • Install and integrate new technologies, components, or control systems to enhance system functionality.
  • Collaborate with clients or project managers to understand their needs and provide appropriate recommendations.

COMPLIANCE (Weighting 15%)

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe work environment for yourself and others.
  • Follow proper handling, storage, and disposal procedures for refrigerants and hazardous materials.
  • Comply with relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards in all aspects of refrigeration system installation, maintenance, and repair.

CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGEMENT (Weighting 15%)

Customer Service & Communication

  • Communicate with customers, supervisors, and colleagues to understand project requirements, provide updates, and address any concerns or questions.
  • Interact professionally and courteously with clients, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to customers regarding refrigeration system operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts used.
  • Complete service reports, work orders, and other documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide detailed reports on equipment condition, performance, and recommendations for improvements or replacements.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • HVAC System Installation and Retrofitting: Proficiency in installing, retrofitting, and upgrading commercial HVAC systems, including air conditioning units, heating units, ventilation systems, and refrigeration components.
  • System Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, inspecting, and lubricating HVAC equipment. Skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting system issues, identifying faulty components, and conducting necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Refrigeration Systems: In-depth knowledge and experience in working with refrigeration systems, including understanding refrigeration cycle principles, operating, and maintaining compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion valves.
  • Electrical Wiring and Controls: Competence in reading electrical diagrams, connecting wiring, and understanding electrical controls and circuits related to HVAC and refrigeration systems. Ability to diagnose electrical problems and perform necessary repairs or replacements.
  • Refrigerant Handling and Management: Proficiency in handling refrigerants, including knowledge of various refrigerant types, their properties, and safe handling procedures in compliance with environmental regulations. Experience in recovering, recycling, charging, and documenting refrigerant usage.
  • System Design and Load Calculations: Understanding of HVAC system design principles, including calculating heat loads, selecting appropriate equipment, sizing ductwork, and ensuring proper air distribution throughout commercial buildings.
  • Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Practices: Knowledge of energy-efficient HVAC technologies and practices, including variable speed drives, demand-controlled ventilation, and energy management systems. Awareness of environmental regulations and the importance of sustainable HVAC practices.
  • Control Systems and Building Automation: Proficiency in working with control systems and building automation technologies to monitor and adjust HVAC system operations for optimal efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Safety Regulations and Codes: Adherence to safety protocols and knowledge of relevant industry regulations and codes, such as those related to electrical work, refrigerant handling, and workplace safety.
  • Documentation And Reporting: Ability to accurately document work performed, including maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment inspections. Proficiency in generating reports and communicating findings to supervisors and clients.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Journeyman certification or equivalent in HVAC refrigeration mechanics.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver's Abstract
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial HVAC and refrigeration system installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • In-depth knowledge of HVAC and refrigeration principles, including system components, refrigerant types, and system controls.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose and repair system malfunctions effectively.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems, wiring, and controls associated with HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency practices and the ability to optimize system performance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.
